Making Quality Compost on the Farm
A step-by-step method for building a compost heap that matures in 8-12 weeks.
Kuza Editorial · 19 Aug 2026
Build layers of dry brown material (maize stover, dry grass) and green material (weeds, kitchen waste, manure) in roughly a 3:1 ratio. Keep the heap moist like a wrung-out sponge and turn it every two weeks.\n\nA well-managed heap heats up within days. Compost is ready when it is dark, crumbly and smells earthy. Apply 2-4 tonnes per acre before planting.
